Annual Section Picnic

Our annual section picnic will be held on August 4th, 2018 at 11-3 pm. Further details and RSVP can be found on our picnic page. We look forward to seeing many of you there!

Call for Members of Executive Committee for 2019

The section is calling for expressions of interest for the following positions that will be voted on and elected for terms beginning in January 2019:

  • Chair-Elect (three-year cycle beginning in 2019 - to serve as Chair in 2020 and Immediate Past Chair in 2021).
  • Treasurer (two-year term - 2019-2020).
  • Secretary (one-year short term - 2019).

Members who are interested should contact Dr. Wayne Cook, Chair of the Nominating Committee, for further information. In accordance with the bylaws, the Nominating Committee (Dr. Wayne Cook, Dr. Leanne Petry, and Dr. Suzanne Seleem) shall present to the Executive Committee a slate of nominees for these positions by no later than August 15th, 2018.

We note that the Secretary position is currently vacant. The Executive Committee is interested in filling this position as soon as possible through a short-term appointment. Those interested may wish to contact Dr. Anastasie Weaver, Section Chair.

Committee Chairs Sought

We are currently searching for new committee chairs of the following committees:

  • Education
  • Patterson High School Awards
  • Industrial Relations
  • Public Relations

If anyone is interested please feel free to contact Dr. Anastasie Weaver. Note that you do not need to be a member of the Society to serve as a committee chair.

Patterson High School Awards Announced

On May 15th, 2018, we announced and awarded the following the Patterson High School Chemistry Awards in recognition of their work writing the essay on Chemistry in television and film.

The final award-winners were:

  • 1st Place: Kevin Yin, Centerville High School (Teacher: Mrs. Summers)
  • 2nd Place: Ellen Cheng, Centerville High School (Teacher: Mr. Hess)
  • 3rd Place: William Chan, Beavercreek High School (Teacher: Mrs. Rattan)

Congratulations to everyone and all of the Patterson Scholars!

In addition, we presented the awards for the Chemists Celebrating Earth Week illustrated poem competition, and awarded the Volunteer of the Year award to Dr. Wayne Cook for his previous work as Chair-Elect and his long-time work facilitating the section's activities particularly with Techfest. He then gave a keynote speech on his work on ink development and printing.

Congratulations to Winners of the CCEW Illustrated Poem Competition!

We now announce the winners of the Chemists Celebrate Earth Week (CCEW) Illustrated Poem Competition. K-12 students were invited to compose and illustrate short poems on the theme Dive Into Marine Chemistry, and these were judged.

We thank all the entrants for participating. These are the winners and runners-up in each grade category. Winners get a $50 award and will be entered into the national competition while runners-up receive $25 awards. All of them will be recognized at the high school awards ceremony at the University of Dayton on May 15th, 2018.

Grades K-2 Category:

  • Winner: Angaeika (Ru) Pollack, Stephen Bell Elementary School, Bellbrook. (Teacher: Mrs Crider)
  • Runner-Up: Camden Burdick, Creative World of Montessori, Dayton. (Teacher: Mr. Proctor)

Grades 3-5 Category:

  • Winner: Lizzy Van Auken, Fairborn Intermediate, Fairborn. (Teacher: Mrs. Shanks)
  • Runner-Up: Abigail Arnett, Fairborn Intermediate, Fairborn. (Teacher: Mrs. Shanks)

Grades 6-8 Category:

  • Winner: Meredith Mooney, Creative World of Montessori, Dayton. (Teacher: Ms. Sturgis)
